This remarkable expedition links three of the Southern Hemisphere’s most extraordinary regions in a single voyage. Beginning in vibrant Cape Town and ending in Ushuaia, the journey crosses the vast South Atlantic Ocean, visits some of the world’s most remote islands and culminates amidst the glaciers, wildlife and ice-filled waterways of Antarctica. Combining exploration, wildlife encounters and polar discovery, this is one of Swan Hellenic’s most unique repositioning voyages.
After departing Cape Town, SH Diana heads deep into the South Atlantic toward Tristan da Cunha, widely regarded as the world’s most remote inhabited archipelago. Here, seabirds vastly outnumber people, with opportunities to observe endangered Tristan albatrosses, northern rockhopper penguins, fur seals, whales and dolphins in an environment few travellers ever experience. The island’s dramatic volcanic landscapes and isolation make it one of the most fascinating destinations in the Southern Ocean.
Continuing south, the expedition reaches South Georgia, often described as the “Galápagos of the Poles.” This wildlife paradise is home to enormous king penguin colonies, elephant seals, fur seals and countless seabirds. Guests may visit historic Grytviken, the former whaling station where legendary explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton is buried, providing a powerful connection to the heroic age of Antarctic exploration.
The final stage of the voyage explores the spectacular Antarctic Peninsula. Weather and ice conditions permitting, guests can enjoy Zodiac cruises and guided shore landings among towering glaciers, sculpted icebergs and snow-covered mountains. Encounters with gentoo, chinstrap and Adélie penguins, seals and whales are common, while the dramatic landscapes create endless opportunities for photography and discovery. The itinerary may also venture toward the Antarctic Circle, adding an extra layer of adventure to the expedition.
Throughout the voyage, Swan Hellenic’s expedition team provides expert lectures, photography workshops and citizen science opportunities that deepen guests’ understanding of the wildlife, history and environmental significance of the regions visited. Days at sea become part of the adventure, offering wildlife spotting, educational programs and time to enjoy SH Diana’s luxurious facilities, observation lounges and wellness areas.
